About this pattern
This pattern makes a stuffed amigurumi bee with a one-piece, continuous-spiral body and head, two antennae and two flat wings, finished with a small cotton rose accent. It calls for a 3.5 mm hook, plush yellow, black and white yarn, cotton yarn for the rose, a 1.4 inch button, a jingle insert and 16 mm eyes. The body and head run to 31 rounds; the antennae and wings are much shorter.
This amigurumi bee is built almost entirely in single crochet (UK double crochet), the dense, low fabric that keeps toy stuffing from showing through and holds its shape without blocking. The body, antennae and wings all use the same base stitch, with increases and decreases doing the shaping rather than any change of stitch type. A separate cotton rose, worked in a different fibre, sits apart from the main plush stitches as a decorative accent rather than a structural part of the toy.
The body and head are worked as one continuous piece in a continuous spiral, moving from a flat six-stitch start up through the widest point of the body and narrowing again into the head, all without joining rounds or turning chains. The antennae and the pair of wings are worked separately in their own short rounds and attached afterwards. A button, a pair of 16 mm eyes, a jingle insert and firm stuffing all go in before assembly is finished.

Rose (cotton yarn embellishment)
Using pink cotton yarn:
Chain 26. Starting from the 3rd chain from hook, work along the chain: (4 dc in 1 ch, sl st) — repeat to end of chain. (12 petals total)
Fasten off, leaving a tail for assembly. Thread the tail through the final slip stitch and tie a small knot. Trim the short end. Roll the piece into a rose shape and sew through the base 3–4 times, catching the base of each petal to secure the shape.
Making up
- Step 1Body shaping (optional): Using firm thread that matches the color of the stripe below, wrap thread snugly between stripe segments around the full circumference of the body. Tie off at the center back with a firm knot. Weave ends into the body. This creates defined, dimensional stripe segments.
- Step 2Eye shaping: Thread a firm yellow needle with thread matching the head color. Insert needle at Point 1 (between Rnds 17–18, 1 stitch from center). Bring needle out at Point 2 (inner corner of the eye). Insert needle at Point 3 (outer corner of the eye — the distance between Points 2 and 3 equals the diameter of the safety eye). Bring needle out at Point 4 (1 stitch from Point 1). Pull both thread ends to sink the eye gently into the face. Tie off and hide ends inside the head. Repeat for the second eye.
- Step 3Embroider the nose between the eyes using 4–5 stitches between Rounds 22 and 23. Weave ends inside the head.
- Step 4Embroider eyelashes, eyebrows, and mouth as desired. White eye highlights can also be embroidered.
- Step 5Attach antennae to the top of the head, 2 rounds from the center. Weave tails inside the head.
- Step 6Attach wings to the back of the bee body using the pink yarn ties, positioning them symmetrically on each side.
- Step 7Attach the rose to the tie or wing area as a decorative accent, sewing securely with the yarn tail.
- Step 8Weave in all remaining ends.
Notes from the pattern
- Keep the E-4 (3.5 mm) hook consistent throughout the plush-yarn sections; the starting six-stitch rounds for the body and antennae are sized around this hook.
- A stitch marker is not optional for the body and head: since the piece is worked in a continuous spiral with no joining stitch, there is nothing else to mark where round one begins.
- Colour changes happen at the back of the toy and should be made on the last stitch of the round so the new colour starts cleanly rather than showing a jog at the front.
- Stuff firmly and evenly before the body and head close up, especially around the jingle insert, since plush/velour yarn hides small gaps but uneven stuffing will still show as lumps under the pile.
- This pattern is written in US crochet terminology throughout.
- Contrast colour yarn is crocheted over (carried along inside the stitches) rather than cut between stripes where possible, which keeps fewer ends to weave in at the back.
- The FLO (front loop only) rounds worked at each stripe transition create a raised ridge on purpose — this is what gives the bee its characteristic segmented stripes rather than a flat colour change.

Stitches you will use
- Continuous spiral amigurumi (single Used for all 31 rounds of the body and head with no joins or turning chains; a stitch marker is essential to keep track of where each round begins.
- Shaping by increase and decrease Rounds such as the body's inc-to-12 and dec-to-6 sequences, and the antennae's stepped decreases, rely on exact stitch counts; miscounting even one stitch throws off the next round.
- Firm-thread surface shaping Used for the optional stripe definition and for the eye-shaping step between Rnds 17-18; worked after the crochet is finished, so tension here needs to be snug but even to avoid puckering.
Troubleshooting
The wings curl instead of lying flat.
Tension across the plain rounds (Rnds 4-5 and beyond) is usually too tight; work those rounds slightly looser and smooth the flat wing pieces by hand before attaching them during assembly.
The body stripes blur together instead
The colour was likely changed mid-round rather than on the final stitch at the back marker point; change colour only on the last stitch of the round, and use the optional firm-thread stripe step afterward to sharpen the bands.
The eyes sit uneven or asymmetric.
Point 1 and Point 2 for the eye-shaping thread were measured differently on each side of Rnds 17-18; mark both points with a scrap of yarn, count the same stitch from centre on both sides, and check before tying off.
Substituting yarn
- Cotton, DK weight
- Gives firmer stitch definition and a washable finish but loses the velour pile; stuffing needs to be packed tighter since cotton fabric shows gaps more readily, and the hook can stay close to 3.5 mm.
- Smooth acrylic, worsted weight (no pile)
- Produces a lighter, smoother bee without the fuzzy texture; stitches tend to sit smaller for the same hook, so dropping to around 3 mm helps match the original six-stitch starting counts.
- Chenille or velvet yarn, bulky weight
- Closest match to the plush/velour look but works up larger than the stated 100g/120m yarn; expect bigger finished rounds, possibly a larger hook, and more stuffing to fill the extra volume.
Washing and care
- Hand wash the finished bee in cool water with a mild detergent, since plush/velour fibre can mat under heat or machine agitation; never tumble dry, and reshape by hand while air drying flat to protect the pile.
- Store away from direct sunlight and damp spaces to keep the yellow, black and white colours from fading and the cotton rose from discolouring; a light fluff of the plush yarn with fingers after storage restores the raised pile.
FAQs
Questions
Can the jingle insert be left out?
Yes, the jingle/rattle insert is optional and the body cavity can simply be filled with stuffing. Omitting it makes a silent toy using the same 31-round body and head.
Why is the body worked in one continuous piece?
Working the body and head as a single continuous spiral avoids a seam at the neck and keeps the plush yarn's pile unbroken. It only requires a stitch marker to track the start of each round rather than slip stitches or turning chains.
What does an instruction like "Dec 6 times" actually mean?
It means six decrease stitches are worked evenly around that round, taking the stitch count from 12 down to 6. Each decrease joins two stitches together into one.
How do the US and UK terms differ in this pattern?
The pattern is written in US terminology, so every "sc" refers to single crochet, which is called double crochet in UK terms. The stitch itself does not change, only its name.
Do the wings need stuffing?
No, the bee wings are worked flat over their rounds in white yarn and are not stuffed. They are attached flat to the back of the body during assembly.
