About this pattern
This pattern produces a fitted toddler dress with a pineapple lace skirt, structured waistband and a double-layered scalloped collar, sized for 2T, 3T and 4T. It is rated advanced, calling for prior experience with pineapple stitch repeats and increases worked within lace. Roughly 400 yards of fingering-weight cotton is needed, with 30 to 45 hours of crochet time plus 12 to 24 hours for blocking.
This dress belongs to the pineapple lace family, worked throughout in double crochet (UK: treble crochet) fans that narrow through rows of decreasing clusters before closing with a single sc. The motif is a hallmark of vintage crochet, prized for the open, trellis-like texture it leaves once blocked. Here it appears across a toddler-sized bodice, waistband and full skirt, finished with a double-layered scalloped capelet collar that echoes the pineapple shaping at a smaller scale around the neckline.
Construction runs top-down then bottom-up. The bodice begins at the neckline and is shaped in rounds with armhole increases worked into the lace repeats, closing with a structured waistband that defines the silhouette. The skirt is then built from the waist down as a continuous round of pineapple motifs, widening through a second expansion tier before finishing in a scalloped hem. The collar and its lining are worked separately as flat rows before being set into the neckline.
Materials
- You’ll need 400 yards [350 / 400 / 450] of fingering weight cotton yarn in cream or natural ecru. Cotton or a cotton blend is strongly recommended because it creates the structured drape visible in the finished dress. Acrylic fingering weight will work but produces less drape and stiffness after blocking.
Recommended yarn options
- Scheepjes Catona (100% mercerized cotton, 125 meters per 25g ball) in shade "Old Lace" (130). Use approximately 4 balls. This is my top pick for the authentic vintage finish.
- Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in fingering weight (100% mercerized cotton, 186 yards per 3.5 oz skein). Use 2 to 3 skeins. Excellent stitch definition and blocks beautifully.
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK Cotton (100% cotton, 137 yards per 50g ball). Use approximately 3 balls. Note this is labeled DK but works at fingering gauge with a smaller hook due to tight twist. Swatch first.
- Avoid hairy or fuzzy fibers like mohair or wool blends. They’ll obscure the delicate lace stitches. Mercerized cotton is preferred for its subtle sheen, which mimics the look of true vintage pieces.
- US Size B-1 / 2.25 mm for the bodice and collar
- US Size C-2 / 2.75 mm for the skirt
- Yarn needle (tapestry needle) for weaving ends and seaming
- 3 small buttons approximately 3/8 inch (1 cm) diameter, or 3 snap closures
- At least 6 locking stitch markers
- Blocking mats and rust-proof T-pins
- Spray bottle with water or a basin for wet blocking
- Sharp scissors
- Measuring tape
The list is the pattern's own wording.

Making up
- Step 1Wet Blocking Method: 1. Fill a clean basin with cool water. Submerge each piece and gently press to saturate fully. Do not wring. 2. Lift each piece and press between clean towels to remove excess moisture. 3. Lay each piece on blocking mats. For the skirt, pin each scallop individually, pulling each point firmly to full width. Use rust-proof T-pins. 4. Pin bodice to correct finished dimensions. Pin collar flat with all scallops spread. 5. Allow to dry completely (12 to 24 hours). Do not use heat. After blocking, lace motifs should be fully open, pineapple fans spread and clear, hem scallops crisp and defined.
Notes from the pattern
- Two hook sizes are used throughout: B-1 / 2.25 mm for the bodice and collar, and the larger C-2 / 2.75 mm for the skirt, so the hook must be swapped at the waistband transition.
- least six locking stitch markers are needed to track the centre-back edges set in the Neckline Setup row and the repeat points through the pineapple rounds; losing track of these is the most common source of misaligned button bands.
- Gauge is given only for single crochet (28 sc and 32 rows to 4 inches with the B-1 / 2.25 mm hook); swatching before starting is necessary because the finished chest and length depend on matching it exactly.
- Mercerized cotton is specified rather than standard cotton or acrylic because the sheen and stiffness it takes on after blocking are what hold the pineapple points and scallops open; a fuzzier fibre will blur the lace.

Stitches you will use
- Pineapple stitch repeat Appears throughout the skirt's Pineapple Body Rows and Second Pineapple Tier; the 16-stitch, 14-row repeat narrows through decreasing dc clusters, so stitch counts must be checked at each fan before closing with the sc.
- Increases within lace shaping Used in the Lower Bodice and Armhole Shaping rounds, where raglan-style increases are worked into shell and fan stitches rather than plain stitches; markers placed at increase points help keep the repeat aligned.
- Asymmetric button band construction The Right Center-Back Edge (Buttonhole Side, 5 rounds) and Left Center-Back Edge (Button Side, 2 rounds) are worked to different row counts, so the two sides must be matched against the marked centre-back stitches from the Neckline Setup rather than counted independently.
Troubleshooting
Pineapple points along the skirt look uneven or some fans close early.
This usually comes from a stitch miscount part-way through the 16-stitch, 14-row repeat in the Pineapple Body Rows; count the decreasing dc clusters against the bracketed stitch counts at the end of each round rather than only checking at the end of a tier.
The capelet collar cups or rolls instead of lying flat around the shoulders.
The scallops need to be pinned open individually during wet blocking rather than left to dry as a single flat piece; pull each point to its full width on blocking mats and leave for the full 12 to 24 hours before unpinning.
The two centre-back edges do not line up once buttons and buttonholes are added.
The Right Center-Back Edge (buttonhole side) and Left Center-Back Edge (button side) are worked over different round counts by design, so alignment depends on the markers placed in the first and last stitch of the Neckline Setup row, not on matching row numbers between the two sides.
Substituting yarn
- Cotton-linen blend, fingering weight
- Produces a crisper, drier hand that holds the blocked pineapple points and scallops longer between washes; gauge should be re-swatched as linen content typically needs a slightly larger hook than the stated B-1/2.25 mm and C-2/2.75 mm.
- Bamboo-cotton blend, fingering weight
- Gives a softer drape and a subtle sheen close to the original mercerized cotton, but stitch definition in the fan shells is slightly less crisp; the stated hook sizes should still work after a swatch.
- Acrylic, fingering weight
- The most budget-friendly and widely available option, but as noted in the materials list it produces noticeably less drape and stiffness after blocking, so the pineapple points and collar scallops sit softer rather than sharply open.
Washing and care
- Hand wash in cool water using the same wet-blocking method as finishing, pressing out moisture between towels rather than wringing, since twisting mercerized cotton lace can distort the pineapple points permanently.
- Store the dress flat rather than on a hanger, as the weight of the skirt and collar can stretch cotton lace over time; re-pin and lightly dampen the scallops before wear if they lose their shape in storage.
FAQs
Questions
What sizes does this pattern cover?
The pattern is written for size 3T, with adjustments in brackets for 2T and 4T. Finished chest measurements run from 21 inches (53 cm) for 2T to 22 inches (56 cm) for 3T, with lengths from shoulder to hem of 20 to 21 inches.
Is this a good first lace project?
No, the pattern is rated advanced and assumes comfort with pineapple stitch repeats, increases worked within lace, and keeping stitch counts through intricate rows. Completing at least two simpler lace projects first is recommended before attempting it.
How much yarn is required?
Around 400 yards (350 to 450 depending on size) of fingering-weight cotton is needed. Cotton or a cotton blend is strongly recommended over acrylic for the structured drape seen in the finished dress.
Why does the pattern call for two different hook sizes?
The B-1 / 2.25 mm hook is used for the bodice and collar, where a tighter fabric helps the fitted shaping hold its line, while the larger C-2 / 2.75 mm hook opens the skirt's pineapple repeats for a fuller, draping silhouette.
How long does the project actually take, start to finish?
Experienced crocheters can expect to spend 30 to 45 hours working the three main sections, plus a further 12 to 24 hours for the piece to dry fully after wet blocking.
These answers came from whoever first published the pattern, kept word for word.
