About this pattern
This is an intermediate hooded coat sized 12 to 18 months and up, built from three hdc panels joined at the shoulders and sides, with a bunny-ear hood and four-button closure. It needs about 650 yards of main-colour worsted yarn, roughly 80 yards of contrast, a 6.0 mm hook for the body and a 5.5 mm hook for the collar, and takes 20 to 30 hours in the smallest size.
This hooded coat features a pair of bunny ears worked into the hood, finished in half double crochet (UK: half treble) throughout the main body. The stitch keeps the fabric dense enough for structure yet light enough for movement, making it suited to an outdoor layer for a young child. Decrease rows shape the piece gradually rather than relying on a single seam, giving the coat its A-line profile without bulk at the hem.
Materials
- Lion Brand Pound of Love works beautifully here. It’s 100 percent acrylic, machine washable, and one skein covers most sizes for the main color. You might need a partial second skein for sizes 3T and 4T.
- Paintbox Yarns Simply DK held double is another excellent option. When held double, it behaves as worsted weight and gives gorgeous stitch definition.
- For natural fiber lovers, Drops Karisma (100 percent superwash wool) provides wonderful warmth and drape. Just note it requires hand washing.
- Any worsted weight yarn that achieves gauge will work. For a children’s garment, always confirm your yarn is hypoallergenic or test wash before starting.
- Yarn A (main color, blush pink): Worsted weight, approximately 650 (750, 875, 1000) yards
- Yarn B (contrast, cream): Worsted weight, approximately 80 (90, 100, 115) yards
Crochet hooks
- US size J-10 / 6.0 mm for gauge swatching and main body
- US size I-9 / 5.5 mm for collar and edging
Notions
- 4 to 6 locking stitch markers
- Yarn needle
- Four 3/4 inch buttons in blush pink or coordinating color
- Sharp scissors
- Blocking mats and pins
The list is the pattern's own wording.
Instructions
Every round is printed as the pattern wrote it, brackets and all. Open the key beside a round to see only the short forms that round uses.
Back Panel
These first 6 rows establish your hem width. Now you'll begin the A-line shaping with gradual decreases.
Checkpoint: After Row 26, your back panel should measure approximately 10.5 inches tall for size 12 to 18 months.
Right shoulder complete. Count 8 (10, 12, 14) sts for the back neck center and leave these unworked. Rejoin yarn to the remaining 6 (7, 8, 9) sts for the left shoulder.
Foundation: With J-10 hook and Yarn A, ch 41 (45, 49, 53).

Making up
- Step 1Sew buttons evenly spaced along the left front band. Create buttonholes on the right front band by working (ch 2, sk 2) at button positions.
- Step 2Weave in all remaining ends. Block the finished coat gently with steam or wet blocking to set the stitches and smooth the scalloped edges.
Notes from the pattern
- Place locking stitch markers at the start of each decrease row across the three panels; with 23 rows on the back alone, markers prevent miscounting which row the next hdc2tog falls on.
- Yarn amounts are size-specific: roughly 650 yards of main colour for the smallest size, rising to 1000 yards for the largest, so buy to the size being made rather than a flat estimate.
- Block the panels before seaming, using the blocking mats and pins listed in the materials; hdc fabric holds its shape better once blocked flat, which makes the shoulder and side seams easier to align.
- Skill level: Intermediate. You should be comfortable working in rows and rounds, seaming pieces together, and picking up stitches along edges. If you've completed at least two garments before, you'll find this project straightforward.
- Time estimate: Approximately 20 to 30 hours for the smallest size. Larger sizes add roughly 3 to 5 hours each.
- This coat is designed with 2 inches of positive ease for comfortable layering.
- Size 12 to 18 months: Chest 22 inches, Length (shoulder to hem) 15 inches, Sleeve length 9 inches, Hood height (ear tips to neckline) 13 inches.
- Size 2T: Chest 24 inches, Length 16.5 inches, Sleeve length 10 inches, Hood height 14 inches.
- Size 3T: Chest 26 inches, Length 18 inches, Sleeve length 11 inches, Hood height 15 inches.
- Size 4T: Chest 28 inches, Length 19.5 inches, Sleeve length 12 inches, Hood height 16 inches.
- Throughout this crochet tutorial, the base number refers to size 12 to 18 months. Numbers for larger sizes follow in parentheses in the format (2T, 3T, 4T) wherever they differ.
- Gauge: With the J-10 / 6.0 mm hook in half double crochet, 14 hdc x 10 rows = 4 inches.
- Gauge matters here. Please make a 5-inch square swatch, wash and block it as you will the finished garment, and adjust your hook size if needed. Being even one stitch off per 4 inches can result in a finished coat that's more than 1.5 inches too large or too small across the chest.
- The coat is constructed in this order: back panel, two front panels, shoulder seams, sleeves in the round, hood, bunny ears, collar, button bands, scallop edging, and final finishing.
- Important: All turning chains count as nothing throughout this pattern. Always chain 2 to turn for hdc rows, but this chain is not worked into and does not count as a stitch.
- The coat body is worked flat in rows. Sleeves are worked in joined rounds from the armhole downward.
- Block your finished pieces before seaming. This sets the stitch definition and makes seaming significantly cleaner.
- Yarn suggestion: Pound of Love (100% acrylic, machine washable); one skein typically covers most sizes for the main color, with a partial second skein needed for sizes 3T and 4T.
- Yarn suggestion: Paintbox Yarns Simply DK held double behaves as worsted weight and gives gorgeous stitch definition.
- Yarn suggestion: Drops Karisma (100% superwash wool) provides warmth and drape but requires hand washing.
- Any worsted weight yarn that achieves gauge will work. For a children's garment, always confirm your yarn is hypoallergenic or test wash before starting.

- Decreasing with hdc2tog Appears from Row 7 onward on both front and back panels to taper the A-line; keep the decrease at the exact edge stitches so the side seams stay straight.
- Shoulder shaping by leaving stitches unworked Used at the back panel's neck split, where the center stitches are skipped and yarn is rejoined for the opposite shoulder; watch the count of skipped stitches so the neckline sits symmetrical.
- Mirrored front-panel shaping The right and left front panels decrease at opposite edges on the same rows; watch which side the hdc2tog falls on so the two fronts actually mirror rather than copy each other.
Troubleshooting
The hem flares out rather than tapering into the A-line.
This points to a missed or uneven hdc2tog on one of the decrease rows from Row 7 onward; recount the stitch total given in parentheses at the end of each row and redo any row that doesn't match.
The front panels don't mirror each other at the side seams.
The right front decreases at the start of the row and the left front at the end; if both panels decrease on the same side, one has been worked as a straight copy instead of a mirror, so check which edge the hdc2tog sits on before continuing.
The neckline sits off-centre once both shoulders are joined.
This usually traces back to the center stitches left unworked at the back neck; recount before rejoining yarn for the opposite shoulder, since even one stitch off shifts the whole neckline.
Substituting yarn
- DK-weight cotton or cotton-blend
- Drops the fabric weight and drape, so swap to a 5.0 mm hook for the body and expect to use more yardage than the worsted amounts listed, since DK stitches are smaller.
- Bulky-weight acrylic or acrylic-blend
- Needs a hook closer to 6.5 to 7 mm, finishes faster with fewer total stitches, but makes the coat stiffer and reduces how much it can be eased for layering underneath.
- Wool or wool-blend worsted
- Keeps the same 6.0 mm hook and yardage roughly as listed, but blocks more crisply than acrylic and holds the A-line shaping better, at the cost of needing gentler washing.
Washing and care
- The materials list specifies yarn weight rather than fibre, so follow the care instructions on the yarn band actually used; a wool-blend generally needs a cool hand wash and flat drying, while an acrylic will tolerate a gentle machine cycle.
- Reshape the coat to its blocked measurements while still damp and let it dry flat rather than on a hanger, since the weight of the hdc panels can pull the shoulders out of shape if hung wet; store folded rather than hung once dry.
FAQs
Questions
Does this pattern cover sizes beyond 12 to 18 months?
Yes, stitch counts and row numbers are given in parentheses for four sizes, with 22 inches of chest listed for the smallest. Yarn amounts scale with size, from roughly 650 yards of main colour up to 1000 yards for the largest.
How long does the coat take to make?
The smallest size takes approximately 20 to 30 hours. Each larger size adds roughly 3 to 5 hours on top of that.
What hooks are needed?
A 6.0 mm (US J-10) hook covers the gauge swatch and the three main panels. A 5.5 mm (US I-9) hook is used for the collar and edging only.
How much yarn should be bought?
Main colour needs approximately 650 to 1000 yards depending on size, and the cream contrast needs roughly 80 to 115 yards. Buying to the exact size being made avoids running short partway through a panel.
Is this a good first garment project?
The pattern is rated intermediate and assumes comfort with seaming and picking up stitches along edges, not just working in rows. Anyone who has finished at least two garments already should find the shaping and shoulder construction manageable.
